Close to Estonian border, 4 Russian cargo aircraft destroyed in Pskov

(Guardian | AP)

“… a huge fire erupted at a military airfield in the city of Pskov, where elite paratroopers are garrisoned. Tass news agency reported at least four giant Il-76 transport planes were damaged, two of which had "burst into flames”. The attacks coincided with Russia's most severe air strikes on Ukraine's capital for months. Pskov is about 500 miles (800km) from Ukraine’s border, and the surrounding region borders the EU member states of Latvia and Estonia.”

“Col. Margo Grosberg, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) Intelligence Center, said that Russia's difficulties can also be seen by the fact that they have been forced to bring in units from elsewhere. The colonel pointed to the example of units from the Pskov Airborne Division, which were brought out from near Bakhmut … "This action demonstrates quite a high-level of risk-taking by Russia, which shows that its reserves are limited, there's not much left.”

Putin has Far More Reason than His Predecessors to Want Russians to Forget Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact

Window on Eurasia

“Putin initially denied its existence and then argued it was a forced measure who had no other option given Western betrayal at Munich. Throughout, the Kremlin leader insisted that what had happened was an ordinary act of diplomacy which had no relation at all to the start of World War II. According to the editors of RusMonitor, Putin wanted Russians to forget about the pact primarily because its existence undercut his “cult of ‘the great victory” in the war.”

Eesti isetekkeline ankruala võib kujutada keskkonnaohtu

(Novaator)

“Loksa lähedal on Eesti majandusvetesse tekkinud Venemaale suunduvate tankerite ja kaubalaevade ankruala, kus iga päev seisab kümneid aluseid. Ekspertide hinnangul tekitab nii suur laevade kogunemine keskkonnareostuse ohu. Kliimaministeeriumi meremajandusosakonna juhataja Jaak Viilipuse sõnul on ankurdamine tekkinud seetõttu, et Venemaa Soome lahe idaosa sadamad ei suuda kõiki laevu vastu võtta, mistõttu ootavad nad esimeses ohutus kohas oma sadamasse sisenemise järjekorda. "Soome lahe idaosa on üsna madal, mistõttu lähimad suuremad vabad alad ongi Loksast põhjas asuvad merealad.”

Mapping Estonia's Arctic Vision: Call for an Influential European Union in Securing the Arctic

By Erika Varik - The Arctic Institute

“As the European Union shapes its Arctic policy, Estonia’s message is clear: It is time for the EU to step up its engagement in the Arctic for greater security for its Member States (MS). It means the EU needs to be more involved in protecting the environment and energy security and facilitating MS cooperation on enhanced defense surveillance in the context of the Arctic.”

“Estonia, the northernmost non-Arctic EU MS, is very observant of any changes in its Arctic neighboring countries: Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The Arctic became an agenda item for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) between 2013-14. Before that period, the Arctic was primarily an area studied by the Estonian scientific community. …”

Venemaa hiiglaslikul territooriumil jagub sihtmärke igale maitsele

Teet Kalmus, Estonian World Review

“Paari viimase päeva jooksul on rinnetel kõige olulisemad sündmused toimunud lõunarindel Robotinost ida pool, kus Ukraina üksused on edenenud nii lõuna suunas kui ka kagu suunas, olles jõudnud Verbove asula piirini. Need on väga märgilised saavutused, sest Ukraina armee on suutnud ületada vähemalt ühe Surovikini kaitseliini. Nagu oligi arvata, need nn draakonihambad sellisel kujul Ukraina edenemist ei peatanud.”

'We're All On The Front’: Inside The Russian Military Town of Soltsy, Struck By A Drone

(RFERL)

“On August 19, the airfield at Soltsy, some 190 kilometers south of St. Petersburg, was attacked by what Russian authorities say was a drone. Images showed one of Russia's supersonic Tu-22M bombers engulfed in flames after the attack, a significant loss for Russia inflicted deep inside its own territory. When a correspondent from RFE/RL's North.Realities visited shortly after the attack, some inhabitants of Soltsy said they considered the area a legitimate target of the Ukrainian military, others said they feared the Russian authorities more than attack drones.”
