Putin’s war in Ukraine backfires as Finland aims to join NATO

Helsinki’s move strengthens the

Western military alliance that the

Russian leader wanted to weaken.”

(Politico Europe)

“It’s a colossal loss for Putin - colossal,” said former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, who had advocated for his country to join the alliance since Russia’s war with Georgia in 2008. … As a NATO partner nation, Finland’s forces and weapons systems are already interoperable with the U.S. and other Western powers. … Finland asserts naval power in the Baltic Sea and, as an expert in cold-weather warfare, can project strength in the Arctic north.”

“Predictably, there was no acknowledgment from Moscow that Russia’s own actions had led to the announcement on Thursday by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin. … Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto made clear that his country’s strategic shift was a direct result of Russia’s illegal war.”

Finnish leaders confirm

support for Nato application

(Yle | Helsinki Times)

“… announcement was made on Thursday morning 12. May 2022. However, a formal decision on the application will require parliamentary approval. It is highly likely that the President of the Republic together with the Government's Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy will propose application for Nato membership on Sunday.”

"Basically, the so-called grey time has now begun. Although the proposal and decision are not yet official, the official position of the state leadership has now been announced. That, of course, increases the likelihood of malicious action by Russia," Riikka Purra, the chair of the opposition Finns Party, said.” This "grey time" is a reference to the period between application for Nato membership and its acceptance when the country is not covered by Nato security guarantees.”

Finland's Last Lenin Statue

(Yle)

“A larger-than-life bust of Lenin sits in a tucked-away park in the southeastern city of Kotka — but since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the monument is suddenly at the centre of national debate. The sculpture was received as a gift in 1979 from Kotka's Estonian twin city Tallinn, which was at the time part of the Soviet Union. Since then, the statue has been the target of vandals and protesters.”

Opinion: Putin wants revenge on NATO

By Kalev Stoicescu, ERR

“The master of the Kremlin is biding his time to put NATO in its place – time that may never come as he needs months or years in Ukraine still. However, it is probable that Putin will be followed by another Putin as the demand is there in Russia. NATO must therefore waste no time reinforcing its entire eastern flank, from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea, Kalev Stoicescu writes.”

With Nordics set to join NATO, Estonia wants to close Baltic security gaps

(Euractiv)

“The main existential threat for Estonia is just a one-hour drive from here,” Colonel Andrus Merilo, who as head of Estonia’s first infantry brigade functions as NATO base commander, said. “We have to deny the seizure and control of the territory – and that’s exactly what we are trained for.”

“But leaders in the region for long have argued that NATO should abandon its ‘tripwire’ posture in Eastern Europe and build up a permanent force capable of stopping a Russian offensive, as they fear Putin’s end goal lies beyond seizing Ukraine. Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, said on Thursday that NATO’s current proposals for reinforcing the defence of the Baltics were not enough.”

Europe’s new Iron Lady: Estonian prime minister Kaja Kallas

By Jeremy Cliffe, The New Statesman

“Today, as prime minister of Estonia, Kallas has emerged as the EU’s most robust voice for an uncompromising response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is virtually impossible to separate that development from the momentous events of her own life.”

International Cover of The New Statesman

“I am of the lucky generation,” she says. “We were living in a prison, with no freedom, no choices, nothing. And in 1991, when I was a teenager, we got our independence and freedom back.” She contrasts this with her grand-parents’ generation, which as she puts it “had everything” in an independent Estonia and lost it all when the Soviet Union occupied the country in 1940. This clear sense of the principles that matter most – and of turning points in history and what they mean – is the best explanation for Kallas’s growing international profile and influence.”

(ERR)

“The number of people publicly marking May 9 in Estonia, 'Victory Day' in the Russian Federation, by attending a well-known Tallinn war memorial and laying wreaths, was a third of last year's figure, at 11,000, the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) reports.”

“Preemptive planning by the PPA included that where: "In co-operation with the Internal Security Police (ISS), we also paid attention to foreign nationals endangering Estonia's security, and deported one leader of the Immortal Route before May 9. In addition, we restricted traffic on Filtri tee, and we worked with local government," Kumm continued, via a PPA press release.”

World War II Is All That Putin Has Left

By Anne Applebaum, The Atlantic

“In Soviet films, on Soviet posters, in Soviet poetry and songs, the typical Red Army soldier was hale and hearty, simple and straightforward, untroubled by trauma or fear. He cheerfully marched all day, slept on the ground at night, never complained, and never even used swear words. …”

“But plenty of Russians already knew the truth. Stories of the horrors of the war, experienced by veterans as well as those who stayed at home, were passed down within families. Ambivalent memories persisted. The historical record of the damage the U.S.S.R. did to Central Europe in the postwar era does not negate the horrors that German soldiers inflicted on the citizens of the territories that they occupied earlier on. But that record does form part of the real story of the war, a story far more nuanced than the cartoon version of the Great Fatherland War that the Russians are now presented with every year during the May 9 victory parade. That cartoon was on display once again this week. This year’s war commemoration even had a rote, empty quality, as if the Russian state is no longer capable of offering its citizens anything more than cardboard nostalgia—but also as if it assumes those citizens need little else.”

The end of naivete: How NATO must boost Baltic defenses

By Gabrielius Landsbergis, Politico Europe)

On the way to Madrid, however, there are still some unaddressed concerns and vulnerabilities the Baltic countries would like to be taken into account. …”

NATO: New challenges for the alliance as Finland and Sweden inch closer to membership

(Deutsche Welle)

“Sweden and Finland's membership would mean that NATO's uncertainty over how Sweden and Finland would act in a crisis, would no longer exist. … NATO will know for sure where Sweden and Finland stand, and that will increase security and deterrence in the Baltic Sea region. It will also make defending Baltic states easier for the alliance because there will no longer be any question of whether Swedish airspace can be used, for example, to send troops or supplies to Baltic nations.”

(New Eastern Europe)

“If Finland and Sweden join NATO the risk of attack will decrease and deterrence will be cohesive for the Nordic region,” Per Erik Solli, senior defence analyst at the Norwegian Institute of International Relations (NUPI), told The Barents Observer. Arvamus: Naiivsust Venemaa suhtes on olnud Eestiski

Lea Danilson-Järg, Postimees

“Kuni Venemaal puudub valmisolek valusat tõde tunnistada, pole meil Eestis mõtet isegi mitte unistada, et võiksime rahvana uue lehekülje keerata ja oma traagilise mineviku selja taha jätta. Kuna praegu tegeletakse Moskvas hoopis valede hoogsa täiendamise ja kinnistamisega, on oluline mitte ainult ise mäletada, vaid end ka maailmas kuuldavaks teha. Oleme selles küllaltki edukad olnud, kuid üheskoos liitlastega tuleks püüelda enamat – et kommunismikuriteod oleks samavõrd hukka mõistetud kui natsikuriteod, sest just nõukogude pärandile toetub ka Putini sõjamasin.”

“Me oleme umbes sarnast rinde piirjoont näinud kolm kuni neli nädalat.

Why the Estonian town of Narva is a target of Russian propaganda

By Jenna McLaughlin, NPR

“At a heated political town hall in Narva, an Estonian city right on the border with Russia, community members came out to hear Yana Toom. She's a local politician serving in the European Parliament here to talk about the war in Ukraine. … For years, Toom has mostly been pro-Russia. That's popular with this crowd in Narva, which is 95% Russian-speaking. You can literally see Russia from the riverside boardwalk. But on February 24, when Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, that crossed a red line for her. Now she supports sanctions.”

Putin’s Subdued ‘Victory Day’

(Riddle)

“With fighting still ongoing in Ukraine, Russia commemorated its 77th Victory Day on May 9 with its customary military parades on Moscow’s Red Square. There were signs, however, of a diminished show of strength this time round. The Kremlin cancelled its air show last minute, citing poor weather, even though onlookers saw few clouds covering a calm and bright sky. Tanks and other war technology were fairly thin on the ground as well, given that much of its weaponry and technology was actually being utilised (or destroyed) in Ukraine. The same can be said for the smaller number of soldiers adorning Moscow’s famous Red Square. In 2020, 35,000 troops stood on parade there; the tally was down to just 11,000 troops this time. …”

Putin Strips Spies of Ukraine Role

(CEPA)

“Vladimir Putin has removed Russia’s biggest intelligence agency, the FSB, from its role as the primary spy agency for the war in Ukraine and handed responsibility to a heavily militarized branch of military intelligence, the GRU.”

The news marked a significant shift. Until now, Ukraine had been the responsibility of the Fifth Service of the FSB, the department which provided Putin with intelligence on Ukraine before the invasion. The disastrous start to the war, clouded by the pre-emptive publication by Western intelligence of highly secret plans as yet unrealized, and by the complete absence of popular uprisings by Russian speakers (which Putin was told would occur) cast a dark shadow over the department. Its boss, FSB general Sergei Beseda, was initially arrested and held in the notorious Lefortovo prison.
